November 23, 2017- Prominent Iranian labour activist, Mahmoud Salehi, was released today, Thursday, November 23, 2017 from the City of Saqez’s central prison, where he was serving a new one-year jail term for his labour activities as of October 28, 2017.
There has been an extensive campaign in Iran and internationally for the release of Salehi who suffers from serious heart and kidney problems. He has lost both his kidneys as a result of years of previous imprisonments. Amid such growing pressures as well as concerns raised by the medical authorities, the judiciary released Mahmoud Salehi by changing his prison sentence to a fine of 3 million toman. Mahmoud Salehi was released at 2 pm today following the payment of the above fine.
Congratulations and shout out to Mahmoud Salehi, his family and all labour, progressive and human rights’ organizations and activists in Iran and around the world who have supported Mahmoud Salehi and called for his freedom and that of other jailed labour activists in Iran.
Reza Shahabi, Esmail Abdi, Mahmoud Beheshti Langroodi and many other labour and social activists continue to be imprisoned and our global campaign for their immediate and unconditional freedom will continue incessantly. As previously reported, Reza Shahabi suffers from serious health problems and despite the fact that he has finished all his prison sentences the judicial authorities refuse to release him.
