At least 20 people have been killed and hundreds more have been arrested over the past 10 days. All 20 of the top most populated cities of Iran participated in the protests. The total population of the cities where protests occurred is at least 42 million people. However, there is no reliable statistics on the exact number of people who participated in the protests.

Demonstrations have broken out mainly in dozens of smaller cities and towns, where unemployment has been most painful and where many in the working class feel ignored and marginalized.
